“I’m a Writer!”

Jennifer AllanIf you’ve never heard my schtick on why this is such an important phrase to me, check out my blog on Elevator Speeches here. Basically, it says that if you’re excited about what you do… if you’re proud of what you do… if you’re good at what you do, you don’t need a fancy elevator speech. Your enthusiasm and self-confidence will create an aura around you that’s magnetic to everyone you meet!

So, yes, I’m a writer and I do a little speaking and consulting from time to time. Oh, and I’m an introvert. Seriously.

I started writing professionally in 2006, when I finally finished “that book” I’d started back in, oh, probably 2003. “That book” was released in early 2007 with the title: Sell with Soul: The New Agent’s Guide to an Extraordinary Career in Real Estate. I never really thought anyone would actually buy it, so I confess that I didn’t put much effort into the design or marketing. But oops! I was wrong! People DID buy it, and DID like it, so I immediately went to work on the much higher-quality 2nd edition which was released in 2008 (with an update in 2015) with a new subtitle – Sell with Soul: Creating an Extraordinary Career in Real Estate without Losing Your Friends, Your Principles or Your Self-Respect.

My next book: If You’re Not Having Fun Selling Real Estate, You’re Not Doing it Right (re-issued in 2016 – keep reading!) came out in early 2010, and was a sequel, of sorts, to Sell with Soul. I followed that up with PROSPECT with SOUL for Real Estate Agents which was released in mid-2011 and in late 2013 I released a two-volume blog-to-book set called “Selling Real Estate without Selling Your Soul!” Then in mid-2014 I wrote my first non-real-estate related book entitled “It Really IS That Simple” and in 2015 I released “The Exceptional Real Estate Agent.” In mid-2016 the updated version of FUN was released with a new title “The More Fun You Have Selling Real Estate, the More Real Estate You Will Sell!” Whew!

About My Real Estate Career

Jennifer AllanI began selling real estate in 1996. Did pretty well. Enjoyed it, most of the time. I was the top-producing agent in my office several years in a row and am a member of the RE/MAX Hall of Fame. The cool thing (in my opinion!) about my real estate career is that I was reasonably successful without implementing any of the silly, cheesy, tacky, intelligence-insulting strategies that the gurus of sales training insist you MUST do if you are to experience the success you dream of.

Not true.

The vast majority of my clients came to me organically – through my sphere of influence and from my just being out and about in the world with my antenna up and a smile on my face. Oh, sure, I did some advertising, a little farming and worked the open house circuit, but those avenues just didn’t work for me. What DID work for me? Knowing my market, Taking fantastic care of my clients as my first priority and then staying in touch with them on a reasonably regular basis afterwards. Yeah, it really is (almost) that simple.

I left the practicing side of real estate in 2009 to focus on my writing and training career. Yes, I do miss being in the trenches sometimes, but thankfully, I have a loyal following of SWS’ers who help me stay in the loop of what’s really going on out there!

What I’m Up To These Days

262145 4535726906907 1100653828 nI divide my time these days between writing for the real estate industry and rescuing shelter dogs. I’ve become quite the proficient rescuer, helping my local county kill shelter become very close to no-kill in a part of the country where spaying and neutering are not, shall we say, widely accepted practices. I am both humbled and exhilarated every day by the goodness and generosity of the rescue community – what an amazing group of crazy men and (mostly) women dedicated to saving lives! I’m honored to be a part of it. I’ve even created my own little rescue, called… get this… Saving with Soul! ( is my rescue Facebook page.)
